Respiratory infections remain one of the most common reasons for seeking medical care. Both community-acquired and hospital-acquired pneumonias can be caused by various microorganisms. The similarity of symptoms and the wide range of pathogens make accurate diagnosis based solely on clinical presentation difficult. An incorrect choice of antibiotic may lead to serious complications and progression of the disease to a chronic form.

The BacScreen Pneumo 1 REAL-TIME PCR Kit enables detection of DNA from 11 bacteria (Chlamydophila pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Moraxella catarrhalis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, Legionella pneumophila, Acinetobacter spp., Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa), that commonly cause infectious and inflammatory diseases of the upper and lower respiratory tract.

Timely detection of DNA from bacterial respiratory pathogens using real-time polymerase chain reaction provides several advantages:

  • High accuracy. PCR can detect bacteria even at low concentrations in biomaterial, which is especially important in the early stages of disease or during ongoing antibiotic therapy.
  • Rapid results. Compared to traditional culture methods, PCR ensures quick identification of the pathogen, allowing timely initiation of targeted (etiotropic) treatment.
  • Detection of atypical pathogens. Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, and Legionella pneumophila are intracellular parasites and do not grow on standard culture media. Their detection is only possible using molecular biological methods (PCR) or specific serological tests.
  • Differential diagnosis. This makes it possible to distinguish bacterial infections from viral ones and to identify the specific bacterial pathogen for selecting a narrow-spectrum antibiotic.
  • Epidemiological control. Identification of nosocomial pathogens such as Klebsiella pneumoniae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Acinetobacter spp., which exhibit multidrug resistance, is important for choosing appropriate inpatient treatment strategies and preventing hospital outbreaks.

Pneumonia remains one of the leading causes of death from infectious diseases worldwide. In addition, the growing resistance of bacteria to antibacterial drugs requires precise identification of the pathogen before treatment begins.

PCR testing is necessary not only in severe cases of pneumonia, but also in cases of prolonged cough and failure of initial antibiotic therapy. This method is also important for identifying the causes of respiratory infection outbreaks in organized groups.

Multiplex tests

For effective diagnosis of nosocomial and community-acquired respiratory infections and timely initiation of optimal therapy, it is recommended to perform the BacScreen Pneumo 1 test in combination with the BacResista GLA and BacResista GLA Van/Mec tests. The BacScreen Pneumo 1 test enables identification of opportunistic microorganisms and determination of the proportion of each pathogen in the sample. The BacResista GLA and BacResista GLA Van/Mec test reports (a shortened version of the study) provide information on the presence of antibiotic resistance genes in bacteria, helping to reduce the time required to select the most appropriate antibacterial therapy.

Indications for the test

  • Clinical signs of pneumonia;
  • Prolonged cough (more than 3 weeks) of unknown etiology;
  • Frequent, recurrent respiratory tract infections;
  • Assessment of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) during exacerbation to identify a bacterial agent;
  • Infectious complications in hospitalized patients;
  • Immunodeficiency conditions: HIV, oncological diseases, use of immunosuppressive therapy;
  • Ineffectiveness of empirical antibacterial therapy;
  • Differential diagnosis of respiratory infections during periods of increased epidemic incidence.
