Herpesvirus infections
Viruses belonging to the herpesvirus family are abundant in nature. They are able to persist in the human body for life and cause diseases with a variety of clinical manifestations. PCR-based method is particularly useful in asymptomatic course of disease caused by this group of viruses, given the absence of a clear clinical picture. PCR testing for herpesviruses should be mandatory for pregnant women, since the presence of herpesvirus in the genital tract (even in seropositive women who are immune to herpesviruses) drastically increases the risk of a fetal infection.
