Influenza B Virus
Influenza B virus belongs to the Orthomyxoviridae family and includes two major lineages: B/Yamagata and B/Victoria. Influenza B viruses are only found in human populations. They do not cause pandemics, but can be responsible for major outbreaks and epidemics.
Influenza viruses selectively attack epithelial cells of the respiratory tract (mainly the trachea), disrupt the immune system, and promote mixed infections. The incubation period of influenza ranges from 1 to 4 days, averaging at around 48 hours.
Influenza B virus infection causes acute respiratory syndrome with clinical symptoms, such as:
- sudden onset of fever;
- headache;
- миалгию и артралгию;
- cough and sore throat;
- general weakness and fatigue;
- GI symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea).
Although most cases of influenza type B are mild, some patients may develop severe complications, including primary bacterial viral pneumonia, myocarditis, meningoencephalitis, and secondary bacterial infections. Children, pregnant women and the elderly, as well as patients with severe chronic commorbidities and immunodeficiencies are most susceptible to the infection.
