Acute viral respiratory infections

Acute viral respiratory infections (AVRI) is the most common group of diseases that damage to the upper and lower respiratory tract. The causative agents of acute viral respiratory infections are RNA- and DNA-containing viruses that have tropism for the respiratory epithelium. The incubation period of AVRI ranges from 1 to 14 days. The characteristic symptoms of the disease include irritated or sore throat, sneezing, rhinorrhea, general weakness, fever, headache, cough, muscle and joint pain, conjunctivitis.

AVRI Screen is designed to detect the nucleic acids (RNA or DNA) of the following most common AVRI pathogens:

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). It is an RNA-containing virus belonging to the paramyxovirus family. It has tropism for the lower respiratory tract epithelium and causes a wide range of respiratory diseases, including rhinitis, pharyngitis, bronchiolitis and pneumonia. Complications of the infection may include pneumothorax, atelectasis, pulmonary emphysema, bronchial asthma, and concomitant bacterial infections. Children, especially infants and toddlers, may experience a severe disease course.

Parainfluenza virus types 1-4

Parainfluenza virus types 1-4 are RNA-containing viruses, belonging to paramyxovirus family. The disease is accompanied by mild to moderate intoxication. The most characteristic symptom of parainfluenza is laryngeal lesions (laryngitis or laryngotracheitis). Complications manifest as bronchitis, pneumonia, croup.

Rhinovirus

Rhinovirus. An RNA-containing virus belonging to the genus Enteroviridae. Swelling of the nasal mucosa and rhinorrhea are noted during the disease. When the lower respiratory tract is affected, chest pain, cough and fever may occur.

Adenovirus

Adenovirus belongs to DNA-containing viruses. During infection, the upper respiratory tract, eyes, lymphatic system are predominantly affected and, less frequently, the digestive system.

Metapneumovirus

Metapneumovirus is a representative of RNA-containing viruses. Usually, metapneumovirus infection is mild, but severe lower respiratory tract complications may occur in the elderly and people with chronic diseases. Children may experience croup and asthmatic attacks.

Coronaviruses HKU1, 229E, OC43, NL63

Coronaviruses HKU1, 229E, OC43, NL63 are RNA-containing viruses. Infection is often accompanied by persistent sore throat, moderate intoxication and damage to upper respiratory tract. Neurological and intestinal symptoms may also develop.

Bocavirus

A DNA-containing virus belonging to the Parvoviridae family. The main respiratory tract symptoms include rhinitis, otitis media, tonsillitis, pharyngitis, laryngotracheitis, bronchitis, pneumonia, bronchiolitis. One third of patients may experience gastrointestinal lesions (e.g. gastroenteritis).

Mixed infections

In acute viral respiratory infections, a combination of different pathogens (mixed infections), including bacterial infections, is possible. To identify bacterial pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes, we recommend using BacScreen OM and BacResista GLA.

Indications for testing

  • Irritated or sore throat;
  • Fever;
  • Muscle pain;
  • Cough;
  • Runny nose;
  • Close contact with an AVRI patient;
  • Stay in hotbeds of infection;
  • Differential diagnosis.
